Description

The programmatic challenge set by the client was to create almost two separate houses within a new 6,000-square-foot home. One "house" needed to accommodate informal entertaining and the daily needs of a family of four, including two teenaged children, and live-in help. The other needed capacity for large, formal parties of up to 75 persons.

Richard M. Cole & Associates seamlessly joined the two requirements into a unified whole. Within the private sphere of the house, RMC&A created children's rooms, guestrooms, a master bedroom suite, library and breakfast room. The pool and changing room were designed for informal gatherings.

For formal entertaining, a gracious staircase greets guests at the entryway; a second, less formal staircase is reserved for family and day-to-day use. The light-filled kitchen is designed to accommodate both small and large events and can be concealed from view during formal occasions with a full-height pivoting door.

On the outside, RMC&A used a custom, oversized grey brick, and cast stone trim to give the house the look of an English country residence.
